Objective : This study was performed to investigate secular trends of weight misperception and identify characteristics of the weight misperception among Korean children and adolescents.
Methods : We analyzed data from sample survey of school health examination by Korean Ministry of Education, in which 145,893 children and adolescents 6-17 years examined by the Korean Association of Health Promotion in 2009-2015. The Mantel-Haenszel trend test was used to analyze the trend of weight misperception over time and chi-square test, Fisher¡¯s exact test, Welch test were applied to identify characteristics of the weight misperception.
Results : The prevalence of accurate weight perception, underestimation and overestimation were 58.6%, 26.2%, and 15.2%. The weight perception rate increased in boys and girls over time. The overestimation rate decreased in boys and girls over time, whereas underestimation rate increased in boys over time(P<0.001). Weight misperception patterns distinguished by sex and school grade. Children and adolescents with under or overestimated that lived unhealthy lifestyle.
Conclusions : Our finding suggest that health education program for accurate weight perception should consider sex, school grade, and the patterns of weight perception.
